Aiming to further myself and above all expand the depths of my wine related nerdiness I’ve chosen to plough through the book Ancient Wine by Patrick E. McGovern.
Ancient Wine focuses on the work leading up to the discovery of the birthplace of the cultivated vine, as well as evidence of wine consumption in cultures from 5000 b.c. and up to the Roman times. It’s a fascinating book, rich in detail and with a clear, scientific reasoning that I often find alarmingly lacking in the wine world.
A warning to the unwary reader though; it is quite heavy with technical terms. If you don’t remember your high school chemistry you may have a difficult time wading through detailed descriptions of analysis methods, but the chance to follow the developments leading up to what we now widely accept as the birth of wine is well worth it!
